SecuMailer has a REST API for sending secure emails. Both the GDPR and the NTA 7516 functionality are fully accessible via this API.

The API is documented with OpenAPI specification 3.0.1.

The REST API has webhook functionality, which means that the SecuMailer platform can communicate email events with an HTTPS endpoint of the sender.

SMTP API

The SMTP API is usually the simplest integration option for many backend applications because backend applications often have a provision for an SMTP client on board.

We have successfully integrated for customers with Salesforce, SAP and Centric. We have also successfully integrated with patient file systems such as Medisoft Dossier Manager.

GraphQL API

The SecuMailer platform offers insight into email events. This can be done on the basis of a (push) webhook call (see REST API above) and on the basis of a (pull) GraphQL endpoint.

The Challenge

  • Since 2021, GGD GHOR has been using SecuMailer's mail merge solution to send more than 50 million emails containing medical information to citizens.

For GGD-GHOR and commercial Covid-19 test sites, SecuMailer securely processed and sent nearly 75% of all test results in the Netherlands in 2021 and 2022 – without a single data breach. In total, this involved some 50 million messages sent to citizens via secure email with SMS authentication. The solution was fully NTA 7516-compliant.


The challenge
In order to send medical data by e-mail, the system had to meet the strict requirements of the NTA 7516 ( secure e-mailing in healthcare). Communication had to be fully automated, without human intervention. Both sender and receiver had to be authenticated via two-factor authentication. In addition, the infrastructure had to be within the EU. And perhaps most importantly, the emails had to be easy to open for millions of residents, including citizens who are not so digitally savvy.


Automated system for Secure Mailing
SecuMailer provided a fully automated e-mail system for both the GGD-GHOR and commercial Covid-19 test lines that could send secure messages and test results safely to millions of citizens. SecuMailer’s solution consisted of:
Secure Mailing with two-factor authentication (2FA): the messages and test results were sent via email, but could only be opened with an additional SMS code, allowing access only to the person being tested.

Personalized sending via secure mail merge: each recipient received a unique, personalized message, automatically generated without staff having to make manual adjustments.

Full compliance with NTA 7516 standards: all communications were sent encrypted, with no portals leaving copies of data. This minimized the risk of data breaches as well as eliminated the need for additional storage.

Scalability: the solution was quick to implement and could be deployed on a large scale immediately – eventually processing over 50 million secure emails in 2 years.

Impact and outcomes of implementing SecuMailer
During the peak of the pandemic, a two-month period, 3 million emails were sent. The privacy of all recipients was fully guaranteed: no data breaches occurred. Because of SecuMailer’s solution, citizens and tourists were easily reached, only less than 0.1% of recipients needed help opening the email with their test results.
By using SecuMailer, the GGD-GHOR and a number of large commercial test states achieved the following goals:
No data breaches were caused; the secure emails arrived directly in the citizens’ inbox, so were very often read; the SMS messages for authentication were easy to use; the emergency center staff could send emails properly and easily; quarantine messages and test results were delivered personally and securely; the help desk had no additional burden. Full compliance with the AVG and NTA 7516 was achieved.

In just two months, we delivered 3 million secure emails. It worked seamlessly—and even citizens unfamiliar with digital tech had no problems accessing their results.
